High school is such an exciting time. There are so many choices and activities. Life is abundant to you, and you are youthful and full of energy. As you look unto the future, you may have an idea of what you want to do with your life or you may have no idea at all. For now, your choices may be... Do I study or go out with my friends? Should I date this person or that person? Should I buy those jeans with that shirt? But ahead, you will face much bigger options. Now is the time that you start finding yourself and what you want to be. As a junior, you are entering the big leagues of high school. It is time you start looking ahead. As a senior, you are at the top. When you graduate, you will enter a big world, which will be bigger than yourself. If you have no direction at all, you might lose your way. I lost my way for a little while. I had a 3.7 GPA in high school, but I was so focused on boys and my social life that I did not see a path through all the chaos. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life as I walked across the stage to get my high school diploma. I went to the University of North Alabama simply because it was the first school that accepted me, and it seemed good to me. Once I was there, I bounced around from major to major having no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I switched majors at least three to four times. Most of the majors had to do with writing or teaching in some way. Eventually, I got a degree in communication arts specializing in print journalism. It's a mouthful of, but it's a journalism degree. I now substitute teach and freelance write on the side. I do love my jobs. I am a born writer. I also love being in the classroom. I am great with teenagers. I substitute teach for middle and high school classes. Yes. I am great with young ladies and gentlemen your age. It's what I do for a living. That and my writing. I do look back and see that if I would have made different choices, maybe I would be a full-time teacher or maybe I would be a staff writer somewhere. It's all about what you do and don't do. You can't just sit there and wait for something to happen to you. You have to go get something if you want it. Getting the right job for you starts right now. You don't have to go out and get it now. This is the time for you to start thinking and preparing for it. Only you can do it! I know as a senior, you are celebrating! You are so out of there! But where will you go next? I am sure I am not the only person who graduated high school and went to college just to be going. And somewhere in my mid-twenties, I started to realize that I had no real career or job. All that money I had spent and I had nothing to show for it. All the money I suddenly owed on student loans and no job, no career, nothing but a fancy piece of paper on a wall. It looks pretty on my wall. I am proud of my degree. All I am saying is that you need to choose wisely. Put a lot of thought into this. Each move you make or don't make over the next five to ten years will be either costly or beneficial to you according to what you choose. Take time to think about it and researching now. Make that degree more than a paper on a wall. Make that job more than a job, but a career that you love doing every day of your life. Here are some of my tips for Career and job searching: Brainstorm to think of what you want to be or what you want to do. Some of you may know exactly what you want to be. Maybe you want to be a veterinarian or a nurse. However, give yourself a chance to brainstorm on a career. Maybe you should jot down some notes in a journal. Just write down some basic reasons why you want to do that for a living. Feel free to list as many jobs or careers that come to mind. When choosing a career or job, pick something practical and something you can see yourself doing 20 years down the road. Practical sounds boring. I know... But honestly if any of your parents say it, there is a reason why. You do need to pick something you enjoy doing. But also pick something that is in demand in the job market today. To consider what is in demand, consider geographical location and you personal preferences. For example, if you want to be a famous fashion designer, that's great, but pretty much know that you are going to have to live or be willing to live in a big city to make it in that career field. Go for your dreams! I don't want to discourage you at all, but just know you may have to make some sacrifices along the way. You need to think long and hard about it. Are you are the kind of person who is willing to do what is necessary to get the job? Do pick a job or career you will enjoy. The rest of your life is a long time to be stuck doing something you don't like at all! Pick something you can honestly see yourself doing day after for the rest of your life. Everyone has to work. This is your chance to find work that you will enjoy doing. Research or look up jobs and careers. You may do this at home using a home computer to search careers and jobs over the Internet or you may also do so at school in the computer lab or at your local library. Also, you may dare to open a book. Yes! Look up careers in books that you find in your local library or book store. You may need to do this to get an idea of some careers and jobs if you have no idea what you want to do. Even if you are focused on a job or jobs, you need to research on the careers and jobs you are considering to find out as much in formation as you possible can about each one. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has an on-line Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010-2011 Edition at www.bls.gov/oco/. The website gives job search tips, information about the job market in each state, and even has a frequently asked questions section. It's a very easy to follow site and gives an in-depth description of each job including training and education needed, earnings, expected job prospects, what workers do on the job, and working conditions. O Net Online at online.onetcecter.org/ is also a good website for you to go to in order to research jobs. This website displays information on all kinds of jobs except for armed forces. The site clearly outlines tasks, tools and technology, knowledge needed, skills and abilities needed, work activities, work context, interests applicable, work styles, and work values for each job. The site also designates careers in demand and wages listed for jobs. I recommend one of the following books: Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010-2011 Edition, Now What?: The Young Person's Guide to Choosing the Perfect Career by Nicholas Lore, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Discovering Your Perfect Career by Ed. D. Rene Carew and The American Writers and Artists. You can find these books for sale on amazon.com or you can look for them at your local library or bookstore. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. You've heard people say that before, right? Basically, keep in mind two or more careers in which you are interested. Don't cut yourself short here. Again, the pressures of these decisions come at you at such a young age. I can't say I had any idea what I wanted to be when I was 18 years old. You need to keep your mind open to possibilities. Choose a number one choice for a career or job, but keep one or two options in the background as your back-ups. Once you have narrowed down your choices to a couple of jobs or careers, you are ready to move forward. These next steps move you into the future. This is where the real fun begins. Based on your top choices, start looking up colleges and universities. You will be looking for one that offer your field of study whatever that job or career may be. You want the college to offer your top career choice. It is a definite plus for it to offer all of your choices or at least a couple of them. It doesn't matter if you pick a community college or an university as long as it offers the courses you need in your field. Many students get degrees at great community colleges. Some students go to a community college a few years for their basic core classes and attend a university afterwords. In the end, what matters is that you pick what is best for you in order for you to get the kind of education that will help you to obtain the job or career you wish to have. I recently stumbled upon some on-line college guides. Check out College View at www.collegeview.com to search for colleges according to fields of study or location. Find out about a specific college's tuition, application process, campus life, careers, and majors. Peterson's at www.petersons.com is another on-line college guide. You may search by college name or the site will help you choose a college according to your desired location, setting, size, cost, student body, campus life, major, and degree. My College Guide at mycollegeguide.org is the perfect site if you would rather go to the college site itself. You may search colleges on this site. Though the site provides some information on each college, the site also provide a link to go directly to that college's website. When you have decided on a college or a few colleges, it is best to check out each college's website. I recommend one of the following books: The Best 371 Colleges 2010 Edition, The Fiske Guide to Colleges 2010 Edition by Edward B. Fiske, Complete Book of Colleges 2010 Edition, and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Choosing a College Major by D. Randall Hansen. You can find these books for sale on amazon.com or you can look for them at your local library or bookstore. If college is not your thing, there are careers or jobs which don't require a college degree. A college degree is not required for all levels of the police force or armed forces. To join the armed forces, it's according to the branch you wish to join and whether or not you wish to join as an officer. To join the armed forces as an officer, you will usually need a college degree, but to join as an enlisted personnel, you often will not need a college degree. You will need to complete any armed forces training required. The police force also may have openings for police officers that do not require a college degree. It is according to the specific state, city, and precinct requirements. You will need to complete any police training required. According to DiplomaGuide.com, the top ten jobs that do not require a college degree are: Virtual Assistant, Gaming Manager, Real Estate Broker, Salesperson, Police Detective, Ship Captain, Writer, Fish and Game Warden, Web Designer, and Game Tester. Check these jobs out at www.christianpf.com/paying-jobs-without -degree/ or look them up on-line by job title to find out details about each one. I recommend one of the following books: 300 Best Jobs Without a Four Year Degree by Michael Farr and Laurence Shatkin or 202 High-Paying Jobs You Can Land without a College Degree. You can find these books for sale on amazon.com or you can look for them at your local library or bookstore. If you wish to go into the armed forces, decide on your branch. Look up the various branches of the armed services. You may also do this research on the Internet or in books. You still need to have an idea of what you want to do in the military. If you are considering a career in the armed forces, I strongly recommend that you visit two websites. Today's Military at www.todaysmilitary.com is the official website for the armed forces. It goes in-depth about the military branches and career fields. All the military jobs are listed according to officer (need a college degree) or enlisted (do not need a college degree). This site goes over the process in which you will need to go through in order to enter the military and what you should know before serving in the military. The site also gives benefits of joining the military and much more information about the military. My Future at www.myfuture.com is geared toward individuals who are interested in the armed forces. This site provides a work interest test and personality test. It shows you how to create a resume and build a cover letter. It gives interview tips and overall advice on pursuing any job though this site's main focus is the military. You will get an overview of military college programs, military benefits, how you can learn skills from the military, and common military questions. Also if you get a chance to pick up a book, read Joining the Military 2nd Edition by Scott A. Ostrow. Once you have decided on your career options, talk to your school counselor and parents. Start applying for colleges and universities or take your next step toward the job or career you wish to pursue. Apply to several of the schools at a time if you wish. Then, when you start seeing those acceptance letters roll in, you can decide which school best fits you and your career choices. If you have decided college is not for you and your career doesn't require it, you still need to look into the requirements and steps you need to take next to reach your desired job or career. Good luck ladies! You are about to leave the exciting world of high school and enter a world like nothing you have seen before. Over the next five to ten years, you will experience life and blossom into mature women. Many of you will get married and become mothers. Some of you will focus primarily on your career and settle down later in life. But all of you will have jobs and careers. It is a constant part of our lives. The time is now to start preparing for your futures. Life is what you make of it. The future is bright and fresh for you. Get out there and explore!
